Over the Lung Fields: The wheeze of asthma is generated in the smaller airways during exhalation. Expiration is prolonged. It is best heard directly over the lungs on the chest or back. When severe the wheeze disappears because there is no more air movement. Stridor occurs during inspiration thru a constricted throat and is best heard over the throat. The trachea cannot constrict and thus rarely generates any sound
