Fiber: First, try to avoid hemorrhoids by increasing fiber, fluids, and regular exercise. Minimize straining or sitting for long periods. If they occur, use tucks, (witch hazel) sitz baths, and a steroidal hemorrhoid cream for symptom relief. If they become excruciatingly painful and purple, they may be thrombosed. Call your doctor right away.

Can excessive flatulence lead to hemorrhoids?

No: Excessive flatulence itself does not cause hemorrhoids, but certain foods or abdominal problems can cause both flatulence and hemorrhoids flares. In addition, if the flatulence is associated with leakage, this can cause rectal itching or burning.

Can hemorrhoids be associated with liver disease?

No: Severe liver disease with cirrhosis can cause rectal varices, which are distinctly different from hemorrhoids. When intestinal blood cannot adequately flow through the liver due to cirrhosis, some of the blood flow is diverted through veins in the rectum to other veins in the body. This causes the rectal veins to become engorged. Rectal varices can bleed, but they are not true hemorrhoids.

What can a female with gastroparesis do to ease constipation from lack of fiber?

Gastroparesis&Fiber: Avoid stringy foods eg asparagus, cabbage, celery, oranges, tomatoes, etc or food with gristle eg roast beef etc. Use Erythromycin for 2-3 days every other week and Metoclopramide for 2-3 days also every other week. This avoids habituation and side-effects. Soluble fiber probably ok on this regimen.
