Many possibilities: There are many possibilities for what could be causing this, but it requires an evaluation and examination to identify probable causes. Inflammation of the rib cartilages is a common cause of pain above the breast (costochondritis), but such pains can also come from the chest wall, heart, lining of the heart, or lungs.
