A member asked:

Can a 25 yr old be diagnosed w/ craniosynostosis? what if all sutures have fused? is there a way to distinguish the ones that fused during infancy?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

? afterthought ?: The human skull has finished most of its growth by 9 but the many of the sutures tend to remain slightly open until mid adulthood. Craniosynostosis is a term usually reserved for premature closure of one or more sutures while the head s still growing. An abnormal head shape may lead someone to use the term.Physical exam of the suture line is usually all that is needed to suspect/confirm it.
