Multiple sources: This can arise from a variety of gene mutations that are most often sporadic. Differing mutations can influence closure of different skull suture lines and produce distortion in skull shape. In some cases this is part of a recognized syndrome and may involve other body sites.

Craniosynostosis: In most cases it is spontaneous event with no known cause. In some cases it can be genetic due to an abnormal gene. There are also cases related to medications taken during pregnancy.
