A member asked:

How can you tell if a cut is infected? my son cut his finger less than 24 hours ago and it is red. how can you tell whether redness is from the cut being sore or infection?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Pus, fever, swelling: The presence of PUS (dead white cells) after an injury (as in your son's case) is likely the most significant & specific bedside sign that a bacterial infection is present. Fever & painful swelling are others. Redness itself is not necessarily a guarantee of infection but it's one of the first things that happens on the way to an infection. Got pics?
