Not long: Removing an iud is usually done in the office, and is a relatively quick procedure; only a very small number of iuds actually require a surgical procedure to remove them. Usually Ibuprofen (motrin, advil) is enough to treat cramping afterward, and you can return to work the same day. If you have a new iud inserted when the old one is removed, you can expect a bit more cramping afterward.

Often quick: Usually a quick procedure and can be done with minimal sedation. Some cramps afterward, but not too bad.
