IUD removal: If the iud is in the uterus and the strings visible on vaginal exam, it is removed in a few seconds in office. If it is in the uterus but strings not visible, surgery is vaginal and only asleep for 15-30 minutes. You'd have mild cramping after. If it is outside the uterus (in the pelvis), surgery is a laparoscopy. You'd be asleep for 30 min to an hour and sore for a few days.
