Possibly: All surgical procedures carry risks. However, iud removal is usually a simple office procedure. There are instruments designed to be used in the clinic to extract an iud when the string is not visible - usually simple and safe. Sometimes hysteroscopy is required to see inside the uterus to locate and remove the iud - this is still a minor procedure but with some risks.
