Yes: It is typically one of the diagnostic cues. However, it is at least partially, something that may improve over time if parents and treating team are motivated.

Autism and empathy: Empathy typically has to be learned more deliberately and is more of an intellectual exercise. The parts of the brain that react to emotional information and resonate with emotions of others are less developed as far we can tell to some degree. It is best to say that the empathy presented by individuals with autism is more shallow and less emotional resonance with others.
