Burps and ear pain: The eustachian tubes connect the middle ear spaces to the back of the throat and allow us to equalize the air pressure in our ears. The tubes open when we swallow or yawn or if you do a valsalva maneuver (hold your nose and try to blow it - you'll feel your ears pop). My guess is that you opened your eustachian tube when you burped but the congestion prevented full pressure equalization.
