Lip Trauma: If you have a significant laceration, redness, or drainage, you should visit a physician. You might need stitches, antibiotics, and/or a tetanus shot. Otherwise, with a new swollen lip, you should apply ice to your lip 5 minutes on, 5 minutes off. The ice will help the swelling resolve. Depending on how swollen your lip is, should gradually improve 24-48 hours to 5 days but faster with ice.
