Some ideas: without an exam, I can only give general information, obviously trauma can cause pain. Besides the obvious stubbed toe, shoes, activities, positions can hit an area and not necessarily be obvious (personally, driving has irritated the heel where foot rests on care floor). Gout can also hit this area and so can infection. In these cases area is obviously sore/red/etc.

Paronychia,,Oh My..: If the pain is concentrated around the nail area, the chances are it is a problem with the toenail. If the nail was traumatized, it is usually a memorable event. Redness, swelling and heat along with the pain, are usually dead giveaways as to the nature of the problem. To remove all doubt, have your toe evaluated by a specialist near you or a Healthtap specialist. Treatment is based on findings.
