A female asked about a female:

my 2 year old was vomiting and now has diarrhea with black flakes. what could that be?

Possibly melena?: Dark-colored stools may result from iron supplements, foods you eat (like a lot of spinach), substances (like peptobismol), but most significantly suggests bleeding. When blood is denatured by acid in stomach, as from ulcers, stools will turn tarry ("melena"). Blood may also be ingested from nose bleeds, bleeding gums, MW tears. Persistent melena (without obvious cause) & symptoms warrants eval.

No: ...Although it is normal for breastfed baby's stool to be quite loose. Rule of thumb: if the weight gain is appropriate, it isn't diarrhea no matter what you find in the diaper, or how often.

What can I do for severe vomiting in the first trimester?

Talk to doc: First trimester nausea and vomiting can be miserable. Some patients can control with this diet. Eat small amounts like crackers often to keep your stomach coated. Nausea is worse when your stomach is completely empty. Ginger has some natural effects on nausea so try sipping ginger ale. Take your prenatal vitamins at night before sleeping. Talk to your doc about medication options.

No: No more common than for the general population. On occassion, the baby will be carried so low that only loose stool can pass, or individuals may be using so much fiber in diet that stools are loose and interpretted as diarrhea. If in doubt discuss with your dr.

Why is my 2 year old daughters stool always a shade of green? I rarely give her juice or food coloring so it cannot be the dye...

Normal!: It is not uncommon in some children. If the stool is formed , child is growing i would not worry about it. It is often from green leafy vegetables, coloring agents in the food or simply due to rapid transit from small intestine to large intestine where it normally is tuned brown.

See a doctor: This is not normal and needs a rapid diagnosis, and treatment based on the diagnosis. You have an inflammatory condition of the colon and this could be infectious or inflammatory bowel disease or other. Do not wait. See somebody asap, and hope you are better soon.
