Not the cause: According to the National Institutes of Health, the HPV doesn't cause lupus but has been associated with onset of symptoms in patients who are genetically predestined to develop lupus at some point in their lives. On the positive, the rate of HPV infection is significantly higher in people with lupus, so the vaccine will protect your daughter from HPV infection and its complications.

Kids get lupus: About 1 in 10,000 kids get lupus (much less so for white kids). A common age for children's lupus to appear is around 11-12 years of age. In recent years we have been giving Tdap, Menactra, and Gardasil vaccines around that age, which means that those 1 in 10,000 children will start having their lupus symptoms, by coincidence, near the time they get their vaccines. Life is full of coincidences.
