Call your doctor: Strep throat is caused by the group A streptococcus bacteria but is very similar to viral pharyngitis. A rapid strep test is performed to determine if Streptococci are present. Antibiotics do not work for viral illnesses. The test is not 100% accurate however. If no improvement a throat culture can sort out if it is viral or you have resistant bacteria and may need a different antibiotic.

Strep throat: Was the diagnosis of a strep infection confirmed by a positive throat culture? If not and symptoms of sore throat don't improve after several days, consider another throat culture and be tested for infectious mononucleosis. In the meantime gargle with warm salt water and suck on lozenges for relief of throat discomfort.
