Swollen tonsil: Tonsils can swell, become infected/inflamed intermittently and cause sore throat. Infections can be viral or bacterial. Occasionally intermittent tonsil pain and swelling can be caused by obstructed tonsillar crypts due to tonsil 'stones'. Treatment for infections would include throat swab, antibiotics for bacterial infections, fever/pain reducers. tonsil surgery may be needed.
