If only on ONE: nail it usually indicates TRAUMA to that cuticle at a remote time (often seen with manicures) Multiple horizontal ridges indicate an ILLNESS or NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCY at the time of the nail growth. Hope this helps NOTE THYROID conditions have been associated with nail abnormalities.
