A member asked:

Is a dark transversal band in hallux nail compatible with subungual melanoma? it's brown, near lunula, not painful.is it only typical of an hematoma?

Subunguinal hematoma: This is the best guess from the distribution. Most often from shoe friction during long walk or run. The nail will eventually grow out and off. If you remain concerned see a dermatologist. The covers are is not the most favorable to develop a melanoma.

Melanoma: Nail melanomas can occur under the nails at any time that is why they need to be Biopsied ASAP. Podiatrist's and Dermatologists are trained in nail biopsies and should biopsy your nail if there is any question in your mind. Have it examined ASAP.

Be observant..: About the only time I feel certain that the color change in the nail is not due to melanoma is when there is history of trauma to the nail. All others should be watched with various levels of suspicion. Take a photo and compare to subsequent photos. These can be used when having a professional evaluation.
