This area between: the ribs and the hip bone (ilia), upper abdomen and back is called the flank. An injury or bruise to the ribs would cause pain with deep breathing, called pleuritic pain. Other causes might be kidney issues including infection though I believe you would have other symptoms. I think it would be safe to ice it and observe, and if it continues to improve, all is good. If not, you need to see your Doc
