Infection: If the phlegm is foul smelling or tasting it usually means there is infection. Coughing is away for your lungs to try and clear this material and help resolve the infection. Vast majority of infections are viral. Stay hydrated, using an expectorant like guaifenesin can be helpful in the mucus and make it easier to clear.if no improvement in 7 to 14 days, or worse, see your doctor
