Hard to say: The 1st antibiotic used for an ear infection has a failure rate of 5% or more depending on which studies you read. A recheck is standard for any ear infection, but really needed when the problem does not improve. The ear drum and teeth also share a common nerve supply so sometimes ear pain can be a tooth/jaw issue. I would schedule a visit to sort this out.
