If your CPK-MM is: elevated (that's the portion of CPK that comes from skeletal muscle), then a much more worthwhile initial test is a muscle biopsy. Depending on the results of the muscle biopsy, genetic testing (including mitochondrial DNA) may be done to confirm certain diagnoses. Unfortunately, treatment hasn't kept up with diagnosis in many genetic disorders. Best wishes. Dr. Anne
