Use the pascifier: The sucking behavior is a natural self soothing behavior that infants learn soon after birth. Pacifiers help with this process and have no bad effects in small infants. If you are dead set against them, you will deal with the lip issues and likely thumbsucking when the kid discovers it. "Losing" the pacifier around age 2 is more consistent with regular developmental progression.
