Pacifiers: are generally harmless in the first few months of life, and may even reduce SIDS risk, but it becomes more difficult to stop the habit if used for much longer. Excessive pacifier use is linked to speech delays and dental problems. It's also important to stop it as early as possible so that baby learns to self soothe and fall asleep without it.

Define should: A 3 mo does not have the physical ability to retrieve and re-insert a pacifier if it pops out of their mouth. For some, it pops out routinely and they fuss until it is replaced. Pacifiers are a valuable tool when used properly and are an easier habit to break than thumb or finger sucking. Most will toss them by the age of 2 leaving no problems with their teeth, mouth.
