Stay clean: You say you're a recovered iv drug user with terrible veins. Suggest you keep the focus on staying clean and regaining physical as well as mental health. If you're not with NA, do go daily and find a sponsor. See a pcp and take care of your health. He/she is best to answer your question. Follow doctor's advice and keep all appts/referrals. Alternatives: A good IV team nurse can get an Iv in, especially, with new ultrasound techniques. Under dire circumstance an ER / trauma surgeon or critical care MD can perform a CVP, femoral line or venous cutdown to get to the deep veins in your body quickly. For longer term iv access a radiologist / iv nurse can place a PICC line in your upper arm
