Two possibilities: 1. This could be hip pain that can be referred to the knee. be certain your hip has been evaluated 2.May be muscle, bursa, ligament or tendon pain. These are around the knee. This can be the reason for knee pain not coming from the knee.

Diligence: You need to find a doc who is able to give you a diagnosis which can guide treatment. Most commonly for musculoskeletal problems this would be an orthopaedic surgeon; however, pain could be from bone, ligament, menuscus, irritated bursa, irritated synovium, a pinched nerve or radicular from your back or hip. Lots of zebras if common things are not present. You need to find a doc who is diligent
