A member asked:

When is a dental crown indicated over a veneer?

Varies : Depends on many factors. Is there adequate tooth structure to support porcelain veneers? Do you have parafunctional habbits like Bruxism or Clenching? Do you have enough teeth in the back of your mouth to support the front? All of these are factors that can influence which restoration is best for you

Many reasons.: A veneer must have excellent remaining tooth structure to bond to and to support it. Indications are for color ,malposition change, improved contour. Crowns may also do this but replace broken down, failing, decayed, root canal treated teeth, and bite correction. Veneers much more conservative, but require solid intact tooth foundation. Do not opt for veneer when crown is indicated. Good Luck.

Crown vs veneer: A fundamental difference between veneers and crowns is how much of the tooth they cover over. Typically, the indication of whether a patient should have veneers or crowns is based on what the patient and dentist is looking to achieve.

See DDS: Have the dentist clinically and radiographically examine the tooth in question for a definitive answer.

Multiple things: depending on multiple things would indicate a crown over a veneer 1) amount of natural tooth structure (size of needed or existing filling) 2) bite/occlusion issues (grinders/clenchers) I am generally a very conservative dentist but based on the above there are times that a crown is much more indicated for the patient
