Multiple causes: Rib fracture, irritation of the inner chest lining (pleuritis), a blood clot in the lungs (pulmonary embolism), strained/bruised muscle. Intra-abdominal problems can also cause this sensation like a stomach ulcer, or rarely, irritation of the spleen. If you have any trouble breathing, seek immediate medical attention.
