Depends on patient: Efficacy of the various antidepressant and antianxiety medications available is relatively similar across the board. The difference lies in the side effect profile between Lexapro (escitalopram) and Amitriptyline. Amitriptyline is considered a first-generation drug which is thought to have more problematic side effects and negative interactions with other medications than Lexapro (escitalopram), a second-generation drug.

Either/or: Lexapro (escitalopram) and amitriptyline are both effective for anxiety. They differ chemically and have different side effects. Your doctor may choose one or the other depending on side effects and other concerns re your medical status. However, they should not be combined due to adverse interactions. Amitriptyline has been around longer; but Lexapro (escitalopram) has advantages and is widely prescribed. I hope this helps.
