Incompetent cervix: An incompetent cervix is one that opens and allows the pregnancy to egress prematurely resulting in loss. The cervix dilates too easily and the "stitches" are called a cervical cerclage which holds the cervix closed like a "drawstring on a purse or bag". When fetal maturity is assured the cerclage is removed and Voila! a full term baby. You are at high risk for repeated pregnancy loss without one

Cerclage : Sorry to hear about your loss. Cerclage is a method in which the cervix is sutured or 'stitched closed' in early pregnancy. The stitch is used to keep the cervix from opening. It is done in the hospital in the early 2nd trimester to help premature dilation of the cervix. It is used when there has been history of pregnancy losses believed to be due to the inability of the cervix to remain closed.
