Some adults talked about their own microcephaly in the news. do you think new zika microcephaly causes different brain damage compared to past causes?

Definitions matter: Microcephaly just means a relatively small head, and you can have mild forms (smaller,normal brain)as normal variants or have it secondary to poor brain growth.If the brain is not healthy enough to enlarge normally, the cranium does not enlarge at a normal rate. There are other viral illnesses that cause brain damage when they occur during pregnancy but Zika seems to be more dramatic in its effect

Severity of damage.: I agree with Dr. Ferguson. Microcephaly has many different causes and can differ in severity. There is speculation (from mouse studies) that a mutation, (S139N) of the Asian Zika virus strain caused worse brain damage cases in the Brazilian outbreak vice in outbreaks in African or Asia.
