Viral infection: The symptoms are typical for a viral infection, and most pharyngitis is due to viruses. Antibiotics often are tried if strep throat is suspected or for particularly severe pharyngitis, but usually they don't help. Your bf should contact his doctor for advice about next steps, but since penicillin hasn't worked, probably no others will help either.
