Suspect muscular: You may be deconditioned and this is the basis. I am uncertain if there is damage from your description. You need discuss with your phyician, and use ice or heat on the knees and see if this helps. You should also be on a general exercise program and a quadriceps exercise program.

Knee ache: While shoveling snow in the bent knee position , one incurs a lot of pressure on the undersurface of the knee cap. Given the described symptoms , that is probably the cause. Try shoveling in phases, or trade off keeping one knee bent and the other one straight
