Sometimes steroids: One's primary care doctor can check the throat, tongue, and tonsils. Steroids such as prednisone are sometimes used in the treatment of mono (glandular fever) to shrink down extremely enlarged tonsils so that a patient can breathe and swallow properly while his mono illness gradually subsides. It can help relieve symptoms even if it may not speed up recovery time.
