It is likely: a positional thing. One is not completely able to control one's head position while asleep and you likely turn in such a way that your ear and its nerve supply are transiently compressed. The fact that it seems to come and go is reassuring. Exercise is good for circulation all over, so keep it up. If the duration of the numbness increases or area expands, seek evaluation.
