Severe back pain: Pain in back which is severe enough to be seen in the ER needs follow up. Ie you should be seen soon by an md. Many times the ER dr evaluates to see if u have something which is likely to be life threatening, Therefore u need follow up as it is unusual for a 17 yo. To have severe back pain
