Melting sea ice, the expansion of ocean waters as they warm & the increased energy imparted to cyclones from warmer ocean surfaces all contribute to the severity of damage to coastal areas. Interesting fact: Hurricanes & typhoons have the same composition. Both are storm systems with wind speeds > 74 mph. In the Atlantic & Pacific oceans (+ Caribbean) they are called "hurricanes" . West of the International Date Line, they are called "typhoons."
