Is it safe to drink tap water after a hurricane or typhoon?

Treat with bleach: After a flood, earthquake or other major disaster, avoid drinking or preparing food with tap water until the authorities say it is not contaminated. If uncertain about tap water safety, adding 2 drops of bleach to each quart of clear water (4 drops if cloudy water) makes it safe. Mix well and wait 30 minutes before drinking.

Usually no: After a large hurricane or typhoon, clean water becomes contaminated with waste water/sewage. It is not safe in most areas to drink from the tap in such situations. Drink bottle or stored water. Pre-treat with chlorine no other option.

2 minutes: Boiling the water for 2-3 minutes will likely kill all the bacteria and parasites.
