Flu, strep, mono etc: Nose and throat symptoms can be from flu/cold viruses, strep throat, allergies, etc., except that allergies usually don't cause fever. Flu causes fever. Doctors have a 5-minute test for strep, and a 15-minute test for Flu A and B. Mono is caused by the EBV virus, and can be tested for. Strep throat is common, so one will have to see a doctor to get tested, get diagnosed (and antibiotics if strep).
