Yes: I am guessing that the antibiotic is because the doctor thinks this could be pneumonia. Mucous is made in greater amounts with infections and allergies. It is important for the body to get mucous out of the lungs and so it is not good to give benedryl a lot and honestly it doesn't always help that much. If you are looking just for some mild relief for sleep benedryl will make you sleepy

What it he on the : antibiotic for? Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is an antihistamine that can thicken secretions. If he has pneumonia, Reactive Airway Disease or mild asthma, or is younger than 6 years, OTC cold & cough medicines are not recommended. Antihistamines are for allergies. I suggest you him back to his pediatrician to determine if it's safe to suppress his cough at night. Push clear liquids so his cough is loose & " juicy".
