Ear: When the doctor looks in the ear canal he should be able to see the reflection of 3 small bones through a transparent membrane. In the case of a severe cold fluid fills the middle ear and the bones may not be seen and can look cloudy and the bones are not well seen

Poor translation: When we look at an ear drum we hope to see the normal drum reflect back the light we shine into the canal. So the "shiny" drum was likely her confirmation that the ear was normal. It is common for a little fluid to accumulate behind the drum during a cold and reduce hearing transiently.
