When is orthodontic treatment recommended for people with periodontitis?

Orthodontics: If your periodontal disease is under good control and you have sufficient bone support for your teeth then orthodontic treatment can be done. Your periodontist and orthodontist will coordinate treatment so you have the best result.

Not recommended. : Depending on the stage of your gum disease it is normally not recommended for people with severe to moderate periodontitis. Only recommended for people with maintained and minor periodontal disease. Hope that helps

Perio consult: After a clearance and in conjunction with your dentist and periodontist. You will be placed on a vigilant home care and office cleaning regimen, probably every three months to make sure everything is under control.

Perio + Ortho: Patients with periodontis should be cleared by a periodontal specialist prior to commencing with active orthodontic treatment. Active periodontal disease could be exacerbated if not treated and maintained prior to orthodontic treatment. It also depends on the severity of the periodontal disease.

Orthodontic treatmen: Recommended under 2 circumstances. First, patient must have a malocclusion, a bad bite, that would profit from correction by improving longevity of the dentition. Second, the patient's gum/bone disease must be under strict control. We require clearance from a Periodontist, a gum/bone specialist, before correcting a patient's occlusion.
