How often should i check my blood sugars if i am a type ii diabetic a1c 6.9 and in good control ?

Depends: This is very important question. I would recommend relying on your relative's doctor guidance on this.
HbA1c of 6.9 is good number but doesn't provide complete picture by itself (where there any complications of diabetes, what other diseases are on board, how the trend has been during last year, etc) The best option is to discuss frequency of sugar monitoring at next appointment and adhere to it!
