Tonsillitis: Most cases of tonsillitis are due to viruses which don't respond to antibiotics. However, Strep throat, as proven by rapid Strep test or throat culture, will respond to Penicillin. We often use Centor criteria (http://www.mdcalc.com/modified-centor-score-for-strep-pharyngitis/) to determine need for testing or empiric (educated guess) antibiotics. But you'll need to see your Family Doc for meds.
