How easy is it to catch middle ear infections?

Ear Infection: Not very, unless there are other symptoms like cough or runny nose.

Not contagious: Acute otitis media often follows upper respiratory infection (uri). The precipitating viral illness such as URI is contagious.

Not very: Middle ear infections are not contageous. The infected person may be having a viral upper respiratory infection like a cold that can be spread.
