Varies: An abscess is a walled off collection of infected fluid. As such, an abscess rarely responds to antibiotics alone and usually requires surgical drainage or it will spread. The antibiotics simply don't usually fully penetrate the fluid collection. Recurrent abscesses suggest either an incomplete cure or an underlying abnormality causing the problem. Detailed exam and appropriate studies needed.
