A member asked:

Is it possible to can get an abscess/infection on the jaw-bone even if the tooth is extracted?

Yes.: An impacted tooth can cause debris and bacteria to collect around the gum and infection can then set in. Over time infection around the tooth can spread to and infect the adjacent bone (osteomyelitis).

Yes: If there is residual infection that is not treated or tooth fragments are present from an incomplete extraction, the infection can possibly spread to the jaw bone.

Yes: Another possibility is that a piece of bone was left loose in the socket after the extraction. Some health conditions predispose to a delay healing and recurrent infections as diabetes and osteoradionecrosis.
