Virus: Since herpangina is a virus antibiotics or antibiotic mouthwashes do nothing for viral infections. Most oral viral infection go away by themselves in 1 to 2 weeks. I recommend that you see your dentist to make sure that it is herpangina. If it is he can Rx you Valtrex (valacyclovir) or Acyclovir. There is really nothing OTC that will help. Try to avoid any hot or spicy food

Wrong Rx: Herpangina is usually caused by coxackvirus A, and there are no effective antivirals to treat it. Antibiotics treat bacterial infections, not viral infections, and are therefore not an effective treatment. Infection is self limiting. Cold non-acidic beverages may be palliative. Please see General Dentist or Oral Surgeon for correct diagnosis and treatment.

Not recommended: Because this is a viral infection, antibiotics or antibiotic mouthwash are not an effective form of treatment.
