Don't swallow: Herpangina, a viral disorder (related to coxsackie virus), affects the uvula, tonsills and posterior pharynx. As a palliative remedy, magic mouthwash is part mylanta to coat the areas mixed with a topical anesthetic to control discomfort. I believe it should be rinsed out and not swallowed.

Doubtful diagnosis!: Herpangina in a newborn would be very unusual. Even if the diagnosis is correct, mouthwash is not indicated.
